Style Inspired: Joan Smalls’ Turtleneck and Dress Combo

If you want inspiration for an outfit idea this weekend, look no further than Joan Smalls. The gorgeous supermodel stepped out in Paris wearing a burnt orange turtleneck beneath a black dress with a denim jacket. The ensemble is a homage to the nineties and I am obsessed! The color of the top is perfect for the winter season, and it goes great with the dress.

Add an oversized denim jacket – preferably in the light wash hue – and rock it off your shoulders.

If you’ve got thigh high boots similar to her – i.e. lace up boots – then absolutely add them for an edgy touch. If that’s too much to you for a daytime look, you can always swap them out for regular thigh high boots.

Me personally, I would wear this combo with either black booties or to go even more casual, Adidas superstars. The key to the look is the color of the turtleneck paired with the strappy dress – a spaghetti strap number is the best choice.

As always though, choose items that you are comfortable in but also pieces that can be re-worn in many different ways.

Model Style: 6 Style Tricks From Joan Smalls

Joan Smalls is a supermodel in every aspect–she’s been on various covers, modeled for multiple brands, and was even featured in a Beyonce music video.  Besides her hugely successful modeling career, Joan also designed a capsule collection for True Religion jeans.  She’s know for killer sense of style–alternating between daring looks and casual chic outfits.  Check out 6 style tricks from the one and only, Joan Smalls!

1. White Crop Top X Blue High Waisted Trousers

Joan wears a simple white sleeveless crop top tee with high waisted blue trousers, finishing off the look with a cream colored clutch and heels.  This look is all about minimalism.  The white and blue is a classic combo and you can wear this color pairing day or night.  The great thing about this look is that each piece is super versatile and timeless.  The fitted top perfectly balances the loose nature of the pants, making the look feminine, elegant and chic.

2. Button Down X Jeans X Sneakers

This next look is a very menswear inspired outfit.  She’s wearing an oversized white collared shirt, completely buttoned up and untucked, with skinny jeans and sneakers. She kept her accessories unisex, opting for a backpack instead of a purse.  This outfit is still casual chic because she decided to roll up her sleeves and added earrings for a feminine touch.  The sneakers add that sporty element to an otherwise preppy outfit, perfect for school, a day out with friends, or when you’re just looking for something comfortable but still cool.

3. Black X White Combo

Black and white is one of the most timeless, effortless combos you could ever do, and Joan shows us two new ways to wear the colors.  In the top look, Joan decided to up the sexy factor by pairing a black sheer long sleeved top with a bralet underneath.  She added white jeans and leopard print heels.  By choosing a loose fitted top with dark red lips, Joan makes the look elegant and still nighttime chic.  The animal print detail is a great way to add some fun and color to the black and white look.

In this black and white pairing, Joan takes her street style urban by wearing a long sleeved dress with a short sleeved sheer top layered on top.  She added black and white sneakers, a chunky gold necklace and a black clutch to complete her look.  I think the layering is brilliant–you add color and dimension to a simple white dress by layering.  The gold necklace is an easy way to add another texture to the black and white outfit.  The sneakers are the perfect way to add a touch of urban flare to a dress, keeping it casual cool.

4. Track Pants

Track pants are one of my favorite trends this year–why?  Because you can dress it up or down, and they are just so comfortable!  Joan shows us two different ways to wear track pants.  In the top look,  she chose black track pants, pairing them with a white t-shirt, black blazer and patterned slip ons.  The blazer makes the look more formal, while the slip ons downplay the fancy vibes.  Her white long-sleeved shirt popping out at the cuffs is another great style trick to make the outfit more casual and less preppy.  The black and gold clutch also add a nice modern touch to the outfit.

In the above outfit, Joan takes a risqué strappy black leather crop top and pairs it with gray track pants.  The track pants make the look daytime chic, while the strappy heels and crop top make it sexy.  The combo of the slouchy loose pants and the strappy top and heels provide the perfect balance.  It’s not too revealing but it still pushes the envelope.  She went minimal on her makeup and added a fun bag, allowing the look to be more daytime wearable.

5. Add a Pop of Red

Red is probably one of my favorite bright colors, because it looks really good on pretty much everyone.  I like touches of red–it’s sexy, fun and not overpowering!  Joan decided to wear ripped denim with a white tee and combat boots, adding a red fringed handbag, plaid leggings and dark red lips. The red looks gorgeous with the simple white and blue jeans combo.  This is another great tip from Joan–wear different shades of red when adding multiple colored pieces.  The bag is the brightest color, while the lips are much darker.  The plaid leggings are patterned, so it’s toned down with the black in the design.  Overall, this is a great summer look (if you don’t wear leggings underneath) as well as a perfect winter look (just add a coat).

6. Sweater X Mini Skirt X Oxfords

In this next look, Joan paired a graphic Kenzo sweater with a bright blue mini skirt, oxfords and fun socks. To keep the skirt for overpowering the whole look, Joan opted for a loose fitted sweater layered on top of the skirt.  Choosing a graphic sweater is key because it keeps the look youthful and fun.  Having her socks showing is another great way to make the look more playful, and is balanced perfectly with her oxfords.  The small black clutch is the right choice because it’s simple and doesn’t distract from her outfit.
